Judo and Jujutsu Classes in Columbus, Ohio
Tenshi Aiki Jujutsu, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and Kontei Judo in one curriculum.
Grappling begins with falling. In our Judo and Jujutsu classes in Columbus, students learn to fall safely before they learn to throw, because the ability to receive a technique without injury is what makes the rest of the curriculum teachable and the training sustainable over time. The program draws from four disciplines and is open to students age 8 and up who are seeking practical self-defense, looking to stay active and develop physical coordination, or wanting to add grappling to existing martial arts training.
What a class looks like
The first class starts with ukemi: learning to fall without getting hurt. It is not a warm-up exercise. You cannot safely learn to throw someone until you know how to land. Once that is in place, you start on footwork, entries, and the mechanics of getting someone off their feet.
Everything is partner work from the first session. You learn by doing it, not by watching.
How this complements the Karate program
Most confrontations start standing, but not all of them stay there. The Karate program builds striking technique, distance management, and standing combinations. This program covers what happens when things go to the ground: throws, takedowns, and ground control. The two programs are designed to work together. Neither is a sport curriculum.
Safe House Grappling Academy
The Judo and Jujutsu program is offered in affiliation with Safe House Grappling Academy, Master Hatfield's dedicated grappling organization. Safe House Grappling Academy provides focused grappling training built on the same foundational principles taught here at the dojo.

Alicia Cooper
"I could not speak more highly of Sensei Hatfield. The environment and class culture speaks for itself, but the safe space to learn and the disciplined curriculum is like no other in the area. We have visited a number of facilities around Columbus and this place is hands down the best around."
Karen Tussey
"As a lifelong martial artist myself, I can confidently say that the real life self defense training that is taught far surpasses any expectations I may have had beforehand. Master Hatfield is a true martial artist that refuses to sugarcoat and tells it like it is. His compassion for his students and the love he has for the arts is truly admirable."
